Open eye meditation on eye floaters
|
This
is the latest issue of “Holistic Vision”, the spiritual
project by the author and consciousness researcher Floco Tausin.
It is devoted to a phenomenon known as idiopathic or harmless “eye floaters” or “muscae volitantes”
(see
pictures) among ophthalmologists. We see them
as scattered, mobile, transparent dots and strings in our visual
field. “Holistic Vision” includes ophthalmology but
questions its conclusion on floaters and goes beyond. For the
observation and open eye meditation reveals a connection between
altered states of consciousness and the way floaters look. Furthermore,
a look at different cultures highlights floaters as an object
of art and spirituality. By this “holistic vision”,
Floco Tausin pursues the question whether these spheres and strings
are first appearances of a shining structure of consciousness
within which we cover a distance to our spiritual origin –
a path that lights up through open eye meditation.

Story
Vitreous opacity vs. nervous
system - Do eye floaters arise from the visual nervous system?
For
centuries, scholars have found different explanation for eye floaters,
the mobile, scattered and transparent spheres and strings in our visual
field. Early on, the origin was thought to be in the eye and the phenomenon
was considered a disorder or degeneration somewhere between pupil and
retina. Today, eye floaters are believed to be an opacity of the vitreous.
However, careful observation of floaters reveal regular structures that
call the degeneration thesis into question. These structures strikingly
resemble the morphological and functional structures of receptive fields
of the visual nervous system. Thus the hypothesis of this article: so-called
“idiopathic” (harmless) eye floaters are a visible expression
of neuronal processes.

The following feedback
was sent by reader S.:
“I have been interested
in your information about eye floaters for some time. I am certainly
sure that you are correct about eye floaters being an indicator of states
of consciousness. Here is a little of my story that I thought you might
be interested in.
Ever since I could remember I have experienced “floaters”
in front of my eyes. Even as a child I remember asking my mother what
they meant and why I had them. My mother couldn’t explain them.
When I was young I would play games, following the movement of the floaters
to see how long I could keep them in my line of sight. The types of
floaters I used to have resembled worm like wriggling chains and lines.
When I became an adult I experienced another strange visual phenomenon.
This seemed to be similiar to the floaters in some way, almost like
a concentrated type of floater. At the point of orgasm I would experience
an image in front of my eyes that was a collection of lines and I have
attached a rough sketch. I asked my closest friends if they had every
experienced anything similiar and nobody I spoke to had. I haven't heard
any storoes about others experiencing this either. Like the floaters,
it was hard to hold in the one place and if I looked hard at it, it
would move or fade.
In 1995 I experienced
a Kundalini awakening. About 9 months after the awakening I began to
experience the repeated vision of the abovementioned orgasm symbol throughout
the day without any warning (and without the orgasmic component). It
would appear constantly for days on end. I counted up to 12 times an
hour at one point. Eventually it seemed to be there all the time. After
a few weeks it faded.
Then in 2010 I experienced another visual phenomenon whilst travelling
through India. I might add that this trip did invoke many spiritual
experiences. Like the floaters and the orgasm symbol, the new image
was in my line of sight yet seemed contained in my eye. This time it
was clearly in my left eye.
The symbol that appeared
started to form as a circle. There were complex patterns within the
circle and it appeared when I visited the sacred city of Pushkar. Over
a few days it grew in intensity and I spent a lot of time blinking to
try and sharpen the image and work out what the intricate design was.
Suddenly one day I realised that it was a visual depiction of the thousand
petalled lotus. It too faded after about a month.”
Hello S.
There are a
lot of so-called entoptic phenomena. Most are not easily seen as they
appear only in special conditions of the (visual) nervous system. To
say it in my words: It seems that you experienced intense consciousness
states, induced by orgasm and Kundalini awakening; they were
strong enough to bring entoptic phenomena to your awareness –
and into the focus of your interest.
Moreover, I think that
there is a link between floaters and chakras – that’s why
I’m excited to learn that you saw an entoptic image resembling
the 1000 petals lotus.
Thanks for your report
– and may you ever have inspiring and interesting observations
of your subtle visual energy forming geometric patterns.
Floco
Thank You, S. for your report!
Dear readers,
do you have personal experiences with eye floaters or other entoptic
phenomena? Or any suggestions what they could be? Send your hints, experiences
and/or pictures to me, I am very interested.

Nestor's
Knowledge on Eye Floaters
Inner pressure and sexual energy
Eye floaters
and their meaning were interpreted differently depending on the time,
culture and personality of the observer. We learn a spiritually meaningful
perspective about floaters from Nestor, the seer, with whom I have studied
and whose teachings I recorded in the book „Mouches volantes
– Eye Floaters as Shining Structure of Consciousness“.
In this category, a particular statement from the book on floaters shall
be presented and explained.
“
»We draw the energy and the
willpower it needs for that [building up the inner pressure, author’s
note] from a correct and appropriate lifestyle, for the most part
from pulling up and ›vaporizing‹ our sexual energy.
Then you’ll be able to put your energy into the picture
as a whole. The picture in turn will become more beautiful and
colorful to you, and you’ll be able to perceive the dots
and strands more and more clearly. Finally the moment will come
when you recognize that these dots and strands are actually the
shining structure of your own consciousness that forms the world
around here..«

Mouches Volantes – Eye Floaters. The Shining Structure of Consciousness,
p. 213. (source)
According to
Nestor and seers, the scattered dots and strings in our visual field can
be intuitively recognized as shining structure of consciousness. This
realization happens under the condition of alternative energetic states
of the psycho-physical body. Nestor describes these states with different
metaphors, central to all is the understanding of man as a transformer
of energy: He takes in energy and releases it in a transformed form.
The seers
teach that the energetic intensity in the body must be initially increased. They call that process the “building up of the inner pressure”.
An increased inner pressure leads to the opening of the subtle channels
and to the release of energy into the “picture as a whole”,
experienced as a prickly feeling or ecstasy. This release induces a change
of perception and consciousness, due to which we can see the floaters
as shining structure of consciousness.
In this paragraph,
Nestor explains that sexual energy is an important aspect in the quest
to build up the inner pressure. “Pulling up” and “vaporizing”
are metaphors, which we know also from the . The idea is that sexual energy
is lost through the purely physical orgasm or ejaculation, respectively.
Through certain techniques, it is possible to hold back the energies,
which are released during physical and sexual union, in the psycho-physical
body. There, they increase the inner pressure at first, and finally flow
into the “picture as a whole” in a more subtle form, i.e.
ecstasy. In this way, the knowledge about our sexual energy plays a significant
role in the process to light up the spheres and strings to recognize the
shining structure of consciousness.

Quarterly
Picture
Contemporary art representing entoptic phenomena – “Sunflowers
Figure and Bird” by William Hundley
The
category "Quarterly Picture" introduces realistic, artistic
and/or spiritual/religious representations from different cultures
and times which could show entoptic phenomena, or be inspired by it.
Texas photographer William Hundley likes three things: jumps, cloths and cheeseburgers. He’s photographing all of them.
The cheeseburgers do not matter here. The jumps do: Street Jumps,
Summer Love Street Jumps, Buffed Jumps – the artists takes lots
of pictures of people jumping in different scenes. Moreover, Hundley
likes to hide people behind cloths. Let the people wrapped in clothes
jump and you get a photo series called “Entoptic Phenomena”.

Figure and Bird. Lightjet Plexi face-mount, 22.5“ x 30“,

Such “Entoptic
Phenomena” is a set of pictures that belong to the artist’s
“Floating Fabric Series”. It is just one example
of how Hundley contextualizes and interprets his jump-pictures. Referring
to the entoptic subject, he succeeds to express the dynamics and surreality
of visual perception: the flying objects – never the actual
foci of the images themselves – act as irritating and humorous
distractions from our everyday perception and the “real reality”.
Perceiving them consciously opens a door to an uncertain reality.
An entoptic reality that shows itself in perfect, often grotesque
clarity; an entoptic reality whose legitimacy we nevertheless challenge
– if we do not want to jeopardize the well-built wall...

In-depth
observations on eye floaters – a challenge to ophthalmology
For centuries, scholars try to find an explanation for the mobile,
scattered and transparent spheres and strings in our visual field.
Early on in ophthalmological tradition, the origin was thought
to be in the eye. The phenomenon was considered a disorder or
degeneration somewhere between cornea and retina. Today, eye floaters
are believed to be an opacity of the vitreous. However, careful
observation of floaters reveals properties that challenge this
dominant view and call for a reconsideration of the ophthalmological
explanation.

Many of us experience that prickle feeling with the body hair
